Mozilla and the social network giant, Facebook, just released Firefox Facebook Messenger. The new feature in the web browser was built using Mozilla’s Social API for the web, and it allows users to chat with Facebook friends regardless which web page they are on. The idea is simple, when the user enables the feature a new persistent sidebar will be added to the right side of the browser, which users can always disable as well.

Instructions

To use the new social feature, you’ll need at least Firefox 17, then visit the Facebook Messenger for Firefox web page and click the Turn On button. After enabled, there is nothing to learn as Facebook Messenger looks and behaves exactly the same to what you’re used to in the social network, with real-time notifications, for photo tags, comments, and certain other alerts.

Disabling feature

While in Firefox, click Facebook icon in the top-right corner of the browser, click Remove from Firefox and confirm by clicking Remove Facebook Messenger.

This isn’t just Mozilla bringing social to its browser, this has been a collaborative project between Mozilla and Facebook, which also shows that both companies could work again together to bring even more social features to Firefox in the future. Furthermore the open source browser company said that social sites are becoming more widespread and they want to make easier for users to get access to these sites. In other words, Facebook may not be the only social network with a richer integration in Firefox, others might be in the pipeline as well such as Twitter.
