As we have been expecting, today, Facebook is announcing the next evolution messaging system, which according to Mark Zuckerberg, it is not an email killer and is not an email. This is an attempt to put the user in control and decide how to communicate with friends, unifying SMS, chat, email, and Facebook messages in one place. Emails are “too formal,” Mark said; the new messaging system was designed to be simpler, seamless, and short. The product is finished, but they are not sure about all the features; users feedback will be a key element to tweaking and making the product better; in other words, this is still a work in progress.
And get ready to start emailing your friends with your new @facebook.com email address that Facebook is providing to anyone who wants one. Remember that it is not email, do not expect subject lines, bcc, and cc. You can send messages just by hitting Enter and yes, but you will have the ability to forward messages. – “We wanted to make this more like a conversation.”
Facebook is not disclosing the storage limit as you have in Gmail or Hotmail, but they say that you will be fine as long as you don’t abuse the system.
Also, Social Inbox is being introduced as a feature much like the Gmail priority, which will sort your personal messages putting first people with who you interact the most, and everyone else aside. This feature is on by default, you will see messages from friends and friends of friends here, and other people who are not in your Facebook environment will go to a separate folder. Also, you will be able to easily move people around between folders.
The new modern messaging system is being rolled out very slowly, it could take months before reaching everybody, and for now, it is “an invite-only process,” Mark Zuckerberg said.
